I have a partner I'm working on this with. I think it will be a good case study to do because I already know a little bit about his story and what I think his tipping point was. I think the football program scandal, accusing Dodge and his fellow coaches of racism/favoritism, shined a negative light on Dodge and his team. It would not have been so bad if the team was excelling on the field but Dodge didn't live up to all the hype that surrounded his arrival to UNT. So with a high paid salary and a strong reputation Dodge should have been on his a game, winning sunbelt conferences and building a legacy of football family instead, the scale tipped and the media is very unforgiving. They began to question his worth. There were articles derived from the allegations; most of Dodge's players defended him, stating they are all like family and the accusers were not accepting responsibility for their actions. I am half way excited to be working on this case study. At first I was concerned on my topic and layout but not I feel more confident.Chelly's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11411306557195203326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8756741243648671290.post-45695508756007420232008-04-07T21:40:00.000-07:002008-04-07T21:54:06.111-07:00Golin Harris VisitI really enjoyed my visit to Golin Harris visit. It was informative and free, which I absolutley love. I think it was worth my friday. I learned there are not always jobs available but interships are in abundance. I feel like every agency has cubicles, a little disturbed by that, don't really care for a cubicle. But the people there actually gave me faith in agencies. They were nice and really took the time out to show us the ropes and even asked for our opinion. I maybe would have kept time-management more closely. Maybe even cut a few presentations, I wont name names, but the consumer gut who wasn't prepared and the inside edge lady who was sweet but just caught us at a bad time. We had just ate plus, the day ticked by after three o'clock passed. She seemed nice and very skilled at her job. If given the opportunity I would definately go again. Thanks to my profesor for inviting me and Golin Harris for hosting us.Chelly's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11411306557195203326noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8756741243648671290.post-6314224119418940202008-03-27T20:32:00.001-07:002008-03-27T20:37:41.754-07:00Case study ideasI am on the look at for case study ideas but I'm a bit confused, rather stomped. I look at your example and kinda get the idea now. We have to find something negative or positive in the news that affects a company. Like for example TI products are everywhere now including medical instruments. Or that some organization has decided to donate money to build something good for the community. Once I pick a top I know I will have to research to see what other companies or organizations have done the same thing in order to help my hypothetical company make the best decisions based on facts that we have from the past. Im a little concerned but have decided to give this 110% of my mental effort.Chelly's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11411306557195203326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8756741243648671290.post-37696229784047574892008-03-27T20:15:00.001-07:002008-03-27T20:24:53.510-07:00A New BookI asked a classmate what types of things I should blog about and she told me stuff like a new book your reading or something that interests me. So I decided to do that, I think my lack of internet enjoyment makes it a really difficult task to blog at a constant. I have never been a compter person, I used to check my email once a week. Anyway back to my new book, which is actually an old book. I am reading The Giver. I read it when I was in seventh grade, I thought it was good then so decided to re-read it. I enjoy the setting, an isolated community that is controlled by strict rules. The main character is a young man who is about to be the only person in his village with knowlegde of the past and outside world. It is very percular. I also checked out my tipping point book. I got it at the Denton Library and met Dr. Busby's wife:) She was a very nice lady. Well until next time.Chelly's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11411306557195203326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8756741243648671290.post-39737360776357595452008-03-27T19:51:00.000-07:002008-03-27T20:12:59.469-07:00Wikipedia assignment(thoughts of the experience)I have enjoyed and dreaded working on the wikipedia assignment. It is a really cool idea. As a student I feel more involed in the real world. This is not something I would have thought of on my own and totally appreciate the opportunity. When we got together as a group is was quite chaotic. Christina Burns implemented the "talking stick" which was kind of effective. It was funny too, we are adults passing around a talking stick. We started off pretty good, in my opinion, but everyone just started going off the deep end. We started deleting and charging small words. as you know, we even came to the conclusion that we should delete PR and marketing professional. We had a really good arguement as to why it should be exonorated. We were all really sold on the idea, now that I think back it was quite funny. I think we were thinking too hard about the wrong thing or we just took the wrong approach. I wrote a new definition in which I gave to Amy.Chelly's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11411306557195203326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8756741243648671290.post-22386503621992341022008-03-05T21:23:00.000-08:002008-03-27T19:51:32.282-07:00United goes local/Michelle Owens VisitAfter Michelle's visit I was intriqred. I actually went to a Market Street, the one in McKinney. The people were very nice and helpful. I thought back, as I walked the aisle, of Michelle's visit. The employees seemed happy to be there. I didn't have to ask for help it was offered, well except for this one man. The man in charge of the wine section could be retrained he wasn't the best:) I had to ask him for service and he wasn't warm and friendly like his co-workers. The bag boy insisted on carrying my few bags but I didn't let him. It was the experienced Michelle described. Though this wasn't the new one, it had a huge clientele and everything your heart/stomach could totally desire. I enjoyed shopping there and would give word-of-mouth advertising any day.Chelly's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11411306557195203326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8756741243648671290.post-2327628200608144222008-03-05T20:26:00.000-08:002008-03-05T21:23:31.400-08:00Ethic Guidelines for Poetry FoundationI personally think it is a good idea, actually an innovative idea to put their guidelines for ethical practices on their website. To put their vaules and acceptable behaviors on public display is a bold move. It gives you the chance to see how the foundation deals with corporate practices like free gifts and contests. I know if I was a potential sponsor of the organization I would be more then happy to back them up. I would feel confident in the foundation because I know it does have guidelines that it stands behind and actually practices. The fact that the only time a "modest" gift is given is when someone has had a death in the family, leaving or retiring or has become sick themselves. I real believe other foundations could learn something from this fantastic idea. Which leads me to the idea that there are people in this country that believe charities and foundations are fake. Fake meaning they do not do what they say they are going to and have done. These people believe things like the Katrina charities did not do with the funds they recieved what they said they did and were gonna do. It seems absurd on one hand to me becuase of legal regulators but in the other hand that is alot of money and not alot of results......Hmmm, makes me wonder.Chelly's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11411306557195203326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8756741243648671290.post-62379249123730369432008-02-20T23:02:00.000-08:002008-02-29T19:36:04.484-08:00Mineyard ReuseI think it was a fantastic idea to use the same building for the new Whole Food Store. The quote in the article made it more admirable. ("That's great. It is the green solution, an adaptive reuse.") The way the world is going other companies should be more environmentally conscious. I think it is funny how you brought up the use of the words "climate change" in lieu of global warming. Even big corporations are invoking the phrasing and idea.Chelly's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11411306557195203326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8756741243648671290.post-43463899147260319812008-02-01T19:41:00.000-08:002008-02-01T19:49:24.786-08:00Flog ProjectI think this is going to be a great project to do. I personally want to be part of the past blog team. I think it'll be fun to research where blogs/flogs have come from. I have done some research already and found out the orgin and the number of blogs that web started out with. http://www.rebeccablood.net/essays/weblog_history.html is where I got some of my information. Hopefully when we break into to groups this can prove to be valuable information for the group.Chelly's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11411306557195203326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8756741243648671290.post-82577687948063653002008-02-01T19:28:00.000-08:002008-02-01T19:40:07.905-08:00ExxonI thought the YouTube film was very funny and sad. Funny because the spokesperson for Exxon was arrogant and obviously a liar. The fact that he made promises on topics he couldn't controll seemed unethical to me. If I were in his position I would have made less promising statements and more comforting statements. Like we care about your families and their well-beings. Not "We're gonna make you whole again," how the hell can you promise to make someone whole again. It seemed ridiculous, he kept saying you put together a list of stuff that might affect (effect?) you in the long run. If it's in the long run how can you tell how you'll be affected now? Just seemed crazy and bad PR practicing to me.Chelly's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11411306557195203326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8756741243648671290.post-65266351109085097322008-01-23T10:16:00.000-08:002008-01-23T10:48:38.511-08:00The Roger Clemens StoryI think that Roger Clemens is handling his situation erratically. Instead of being humble and calm he is behaving brash. In the article in the New York Times, it described him storming off and fuming. I am under the impression that steriods make you a unstable anyway so maybe the American public think the same way I do. He admitted to injection of painkillers and vitamin B12, which leads me to believe that maybe he did slip some steriods into the mix every now and then. The fact that all of these athletes are being but on trial for human hormone growth usage is also affecting the entertainment business too. Rappers and singers are now being but on public trial for allege usage of steriods. I never really thought about if they use steriods or not, I never really cared honestly. But now its a big deal that is spreading like wild fire. Even Marion Jones got caught using, stripping her of her prestige medals. What a shame what this world has come to.Chelly's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11411306557195203326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8756741243648671290.post-45309646316659858162007-12-12T21:08:00.002-08:002007-12-14T12:25:32.299-08:00Content AnaylsisTitle: The Primary Roles of Females in the Ads of a Fashion Magazine

Two-Sentence Summary of Findings:
Women that are in the fashion ads are predominately sexy, risqué white females. There is usually one model in the ad and when another race is represented it is rare and they are put on display as a less sexy figure.

Summary of Previous Study:
The previous study by Tom Reichhert and Jacqueline Lambiase (“Sex and the Marketing of Consumer Magazines: How Men’s Magazines Sexualized Their Covers to Compete with Maxim,”2000, Sex in Consumer Culture) presents the facts the women were put on display for purposes to sell magazines because the old methods were not working. In ten years the presence of women on covers of magazines jumped up by forty percent. The study included five magazines Rolling Stone, Esquire, Details, GQ and Maxim. Maxim was the main magazine chosen by this study due to the fact that they have a formula they have discovered worked. Put a B-list actress on the cover and maintain 2.5 million subscribers. The other four changed their formula after Maxim’s debut and success. (Gremillion, 1997; Handy, 1999; Jacobson, 2002)

The Most Important Foundation Literature and its Relation to My Project: The most relevant study used by the previous study is by Soley & Kurzbard (“Sex in Advertising,” 1986, Journal of Advertising) helping to create a coding scale. The coding scale was used to analyze the depictions of the ads/covers. Some of the categories outlined were: primary models, the number of models, sex role, view of the body and sex factor. I chose to make a coding scale similar to this one because I felt it gage what I was looking for accurately. I also wanted to see exactly how many non-whites were represented in this high fashion magazine.

Corpus and Method:
My corpus method was to take Harper’s Bazaar from the months of March, May, June, July and August 2007. I left out April because I only wanted two months of spring and all three months of summer. I looked at all the ads in these magazines and gage the depictions according to my coding scale. I chose Harper’s Bazaar because to me it has always been a non-bias magazine representing fashion not race like I feel other magazines do. I never thought in a content analysis frame of mind either. The magazine focuses strictly on fashion there are not very many pages with wording on them unless it is describing the clothing; who made it, who’s wearing, where to get it. I used both qualitative and quantitative methods for my content analysis, coding the number of models, their race, style of dress, view of body and sexiness. The Maxim Coding Scale was an excellent guide to help me build my scale (“Sex and the Marketing of Consumer Magazines: How Men’s Magazines Sexualized Their Covers to Compete with Maxim,”2000, Sex in Consumer Culture). I used the view of the body to figure out the true depiction of the model/s, full body, three-quarters, head and torso or face only.

Findings: I only found one ad with more than seven models, Valentino; an Italian designer was feature in the middle of ten models in the same demure-type red tube top dress. Of the ten models four were non- white, one was actually black with a dark, deep skin tone. Another ad for a shoe company depicted three models, two white one black. The black model in this ad was placed in the back. I found another ad for dove with an older lady appearing to be nude showing her head and shoulders. The only other nude model I saw was of a non-white dark hair woman with a stingray on her back. It was so odd I forgot what they were advertising. In a June issue I found a pair of lips, in which I assumed to be non-white, the advertisement was for jewelry therefore it didn’t make too much sense, but what I did find interesting is that the lips were slightly separated. As stated in another study performed by Debra Merskin (“Where Are Clothes Going? The Pornographic Gaze in Mainstream American Fashion Advertising,” 2006, Sex in Consumer Culture). I found one specific Hispanic model, Eva Longoria for “Bebe Sport,” she was partially clad and had a coding of yes for sexiness.

Conclusion:
This mini-study does uncover some of the same findings of the prior research. Women are used as sexual figures to sell to other women. I could have went more into depth with my research and singled-out specific races like Asian, African-American, Latina, bi-racial and etc but I felt white vs. non- white would develop more results. Another cool study would be the depiction of white vs. non-white females on prime time sitcoms.
References:
Merskin, Debra. As children we are raised to get an education and make our own money so we dont' have to depend on a man. I think as children African-American men are not neccesarily taught the same values. They don't have to succeed in order to be self sufficent it's already a given. They even are cuddle more than their female counter parts. Girls are pushed, at least I was, to go the extra mile while boys are treated like little kings. I have a brother and when we were younger he could do everything I wasn't allowed to do. I had to wait my tuirn being the youngest and female. He ended up joining the air force and I later enrolled in college. Im proud of him but am sure that college and being self sufficent wasn't drilled in him like it was in me.Chelly's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11411306557195203326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8756741243648671290.post-78957162812503075982007-12-07T12:21:00.000-08:002007-12-12T17:48:25.194-08:00The stereotypical asian nerd and the cool hip-hop black guyThe stereotype that all Asians are super smart and usually rich has lingered in my mind since I knew Asian people. Coming to college has really changed my perception of that stereotype and Asian people in general. I really believed in high school that Asians were either smart or a racing fanatics (fast and furious). The martial art stereotype wasn't real to me to Jet Li and Jackie Chan seemed far fetched for ordinary Asian kids. The cool hip-hop black guy stereotype made me laugh because it does have a ring of truth to it. Most of the black guys I knew in high school were cool guys that played sports and listened to hip-hop, but they were listening to hip-hop with their white and Hispanic teammates. That is why I found humor in our class discussion. The Asian stereotypes that where said by my classmates are thoughts that everyone knows is false.Chelly's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11411306557195203326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8756741243648671290.post-78711114550094218842007-12-07T12:10:00.001-08:002007-12-07T12:20:59.633-08:00Final Assignment WoesI was a little scared to start my final assignment. But I did my research and made an insightful coding sheet I think:) I choose to focus on the depictions of white females verses the depiction of non-white females. I also outlined how they were depicted as far as sexuality is concerned. I used Harper's Bazaar for the months of March, May, June, July and August. I didn't use April because I wanted to use one month of spring, all the months of summer and a little preview of fall.Chelly's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11411306557195203326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8756741243648671290.post-85130622839456200702007-12-07T12:06:00.000-08:002007-12-12T21:06:39.952-08:00Race Trumping Gender or Vice VersaI think that race trumps gender when it comes to the sex of the person. I know being a women, though I am black, my gender and outside appearance really plays a big role. When applying for jobs or different positions I don't think my race is a factor when deciding my eligibility. I feel like me being an approachable woman is the key factor in most of the situation I deal with in life, honestly. I also think that when a minority such as a Hispanic man goes for a job position he is perceived by a stereotype of his culture then judge by his gender.Chelly's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11411306557195203326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8756741243648671290.post-18210152400791464562007-12-07T11:53:00.000-08:002007-12-11T12:02:00.699-08:00A Girl Like Me ReflectionThe girl like me documentary was very enlighten and sad. The young teen who created the film was very smart to dig deep into children's psyche. The saddest scene is when a little black girl was asked which doll is the nice doll and she chose the white one, holding it up with a smile. When asked which doll is bad she pointed at the black one, when later asked which one represents or resembles you she sadly slides the black doll in shame. It made me want to cry and inspired me to teach my children in the future that no color of skin or doll is better than another. Being an African-American woman I never really felt inferior as a child, but I also have a very strong sense of who I am, as I got older I did realize the world is a cruel place that does judge. People honestly believe that people are inferior because of their skin color.Chelly's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11411306557195203326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8756741243648671290.post-923668064198745832007-12-07T11:35:00.000-08:002007-12-07T11:53:17.482-08:00BamboozledI enjoyed the viewing of this movie. It got a bit uncomfortable after a while, because I have already seen the movie but I felt like a lot of my classmates where looking at me for a reaction. Being an African American woman, I like to associate with all kinds of races. I felt really black that day though, like as long as I thought it was okay to make fun of black people then it was okay for others to enjoy the movie. Stereotypes suck but are very existent, the movie is a spoof but offers a lot of truth to it.Chelly's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11411306557195203326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8756741243648671290.post-12660068764020787962007-10-09T10:25:00.000-07:002007-10-09T10:29:39.881-07:00BloggingI just wanted to talk about the Vocab Test. I think it is incredible that people are rallying together for the sake of the youths of Jena, LA. Reading the coverage of the Dallas Morning News, I was happy to read that they were also white people involved. If you were watching the news they focused mostly on the black community. The story I read had the white person's point-of-view more than once and was very interesting. I also noticed how the figures of how many people actually did show-up was different from the police officials and the organizers. The police said there were about 20,000 people while the organizers said there were 50,000 people in attendance. It was a very interesting story.Chelly's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11411306557195203326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8756741243648671290.post-90031892314946965862007-09-20T11:17:00.000-07:002007-09-20T11:21:16.394-07:00Weekly ReportProgress on my assignment for this Friday's due date is moving slow honestly but will be completed. I had a bit of trouble retrieving an old publication because of the library people that work the microfilm are off whenever I go to look. My search will continue. I already ask my grandma so questions though so I got that out the way:)Chelly's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11411306557195203326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8756741243648671290.post-25486402296807202142007-09-18T19:38:00.000-07:002007-09-18T19:52:05.925-07:00News HabitsI generally get my news from the television. I watch the local news nightly and try to catch CNN or Fox News during the day. Sometimes I'll grab a paper for fun but not usually:) I always look at the headlines on Yahoo.com when I check my emails. I watch the news about everyday, I read the paper news about once a week and the Internet news I usually read three to four times a week. I watch everything the news has to show and I love entertainment news, it's very funny to me, plus I love fashion. Online and paper I usually just look at the headline stories. I think I spend about 15 hours a week seeking out or viewing news.
I think the news to some extent exploit minorities to make them seem a lot worse than there are. The media, in my opinion, stereotype for their own bias reasons and rating of course. I think the news would rather report a male figure doing something well over a female figure doing positive work. Lastly, I think people with disabilities are sometimes exploited, in order to keep ratings high for television stations.Chelly's Bloghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11411306557195203326noreply@blogger.com0
